The Dallas Black Film Festival was created by independent filmmaker and artist, LaRome Armstrong in March of 2003. The reason and explanation for the film festival is prior to this time no film festival of this kind existed in Dallas, Texas. The festival was created for independent local and independent filmmakers world wide to have a voice and have their product screened and recognized. The festival presented something unique to the Southwest region. The film festival is grass root's this is why Armstrong never ever emphasized hollywood dream's or promise's to any of the participant's however, he did offer an independent voice for all independent filmmakers who took part.
The festival is a three day event showcasing the best in independent black films. The film festival includes a black movie trivia contest, a children's film festival, best independent film award and best children's film contests. Collections of black movie posters (showcase) also on display. Black movie soundtracks from various films presented and play's throughout the festival. The festival also includes a black liberation segment, films which deal with the black struggle in the America's and world wide. Old classic black films are also shown from the past 1920's to 1940's. The basic ideal was to create a setting that would foster courage and endurance among aspiring filmmakers. The festival was started unaided, striving to display the rich heritage African-Americans have stored in films and movies for decade's. (Armstrong lives by the quote always shoot to originate not imitate).
